International Literacy Day 2017

Maryville Elementary was on The Dot with International Literacy Day! To celebrate the uniqueness of each student along with the power of reading, the school participated in a variety of activities that tied into the children’s book The Dot written by author Peter H. Reynolds. Each teacher received a copy of the book which they read aloud Friday morning. After reading the story, each student created their own special dot which they added to the Dot Tree (created by art teacher, Ms. Diane Turnley) in the cafeteria. The tree will serve as a visual reminder of the joy of learning and reading and how we all work together as a community of learners with our own special traits! Other special area teachers got in on the literacy fun, too! PE teacher Mrs. M. Wall had students find “the spot” that fit their dot by using dots to graph students’ favorite sports, and music teacher Ms. Alston taught her students songs inspired by The Dot to encourage students to make their own special marks! Celebrating International Literacy Day was a lot of fun and set a positive tone for all of the great learning to come this school year!
